AUCTION TIME!

Don't call it a dream, call it a PLAN!

Les and I attended one of our favorite auctions yesterday, John Kruesel's General Merchandise and Auction Co.  This one is in our home town. We preview the items the night before and set up our canvas lawn chairs. They usually have two buildings full but we plant our chairs in front of the main auctioneer so we have a place to sit and rest while viewing and bidding on items. This area is where the higher end items ( some, hundreds of dollars per item) are bid on. The other building is often the lower end items, though still amazing items, and we walk around the building following the auctioneers. And yes, I'm usually bidding on the lower priced items. But you can still find some great stuff, like this great "spool chest", which has a special name, but I forgot it.

When we arrive on Saturday morning, I have my coffee in hand ( brought from home ) and we find our chairs, three rows from the front. John Kruesel, the main auctioneer, owner, and friend of ours, begins with the pledge of allegiance. He's a very patriotic guy and sits up on a stage behind a large "desk" decorated with a red, white, and blue banner, an American flag hanging behind him. Many long time followers of these events sit in the front rows. John's whole family is there helping out. His two daughters ,who are young adults, help out although there are many workers at these events. Their dog, a black lab, walks around like he owns the place.

I bid on this old trunk, but a friend purchased it for herself. I have to buy things at "wholesale" to resell them. Now I wish I would have been thinking of buying it for myself.

This auction includes items from several estates but MOST of the items are from the Estate of a long time collector of antique and vintage items. who recently passed away.
These spoons were sold as a "LOT" and many of them were David Andersen silver and enamelware spoons. David Andersen is Norwegian and this Estate collected Norwegian items. These spoons can sell for $50 each and up.

This Norwegian jewelry was sold by the LOT also.

Antique soap dish.

These auctions are really fun! Well, for people who enjoy spending a day at an auction, anyway. My husband and I get a number ( this year we were the first to get one so we were number ONE ). But we usually split up ( each taking a card with our number ) and buy things we've talked about buying ahead of time. However, one time I was bidding in front, on a sled. Without seeing me, my husband was bidding against me in the back. He was standing by a man who is a local judge who happened to have been a student of my husbands. He pointed out to my husband that we were bidding against each other! He and my husband got a good laugh out of it!

MANY lamps of all eras. I thought this one was unique.

QUIMPER

Many Finlandia Pitchers. I bid on these but didn't get them. So disappointed!

HUGE amounts of old photos.
Many unique antique instruments.

The set of dishes above were Denby Stoneware from the 1960's- 1970's. This is the same pattern I picked out when we got married and had until I sold them many years later. It was fun and nostalgic seeing them again.

I haven't shown yet, the things I bought. Those will come in another post. I was excited to get the things I did, but regret not bidding higher to get some other things I wanted. I buy mostly to sell, so I have to consider what my customers will be willing to pay. I have to buy "wholesale" while others might be buying for themselves "retail".  But now I'm thinking I might have to change my thinking on some things. I found a very old wood figure similar to the wood man with moveable joints that are popular right now. He was in a box with a leather like camel and other stuff. Bidding against me was John's wife who buys for herself. I stopped bidding at the point I had set for myself so she got it. But if I were to have purchased it for myself I could have gone higher. Then maybe I could even sell it later for my purchase price, ( not making any money ) but just to put something unusual out there.

Anyway, it is nice that both my husband and I enjoy this activity so it is something we can do together.

Beginning in November, now only two days away, I'll be sharing some things that I have in my Etsy Shop for Christmas Shopping! I have LOTS of great gift items! I'm trying to post 10 new items each week. I'm getting into the mood!!!

Thanks for stopping by!

VINTAGE FINDS

Les and I have just a couple of favorite auctions we attend for "picking" purposes. We had avoided auctions for quite a while as they take a lot of time and have added costs incurred, not including the extra gas and meal expense. But we found two auctions that were fun to attend and we were able to find a few treasures that we could then turn around and offer for sale at reasonable prices.

Many bidders are there to bid for themselves so they win the bidding more often  unlike those of us who have to buy at "wholesale" in order to offer it in vintage sales.

Having said that, if you attend our events and have something in mind that you are looking for, let us know and we can be looking for specific treasures just for you. We would also need to know what you are willing to spend on the item. We would be happy to do that for you. We would be your own personal "picker". In case you haven't heard the term "picker", it is a person who hunts for treasures to resell. So if you're interested, leave a comment and I'll get back to you.

Here are a few items we "picked" at the last auction. There is much more than this and some neat pieces of furniture that I am refinishing.

This is a three piece dessert set of four, including four each of cup, saucer, and dessert plate. The pattern is similar to Royal Copenhagen but the markings do not match this pattern so I don't know what brand these dishes are. If you know, I'd love to find out. Below are the markings...

The photo above and below are of Red Wing oyster dishes. I have seven of them plus lots more Red Wing pottery. I love the color on these!

Giant stoneware striped bowl for mixing, popcorn, display or adding to your collection.

MORE big bowls...

And MORE bowls...

And  another great bowl!

Wooden mortar and pestle, and humidor

Vintage glass jar for kitchen, bathroom, baby's room, or craft storage.

Some Scandinavian treasures above and below...

This is a Royal Copenhagen

If you are into folk art we have that also....See below

Of course, there will be more coming so stay tuned...

FINE ESTATE AND ANTIQUE AUCTION FINDS

Les and I went to a Fine Estate and Antique Auction. The word "fine" means everything is more expensive! Hah! Well, at least that is the way it turned out! The treasures were from an Estate in a well known exclusive suburb. That should have been the clue right there. But the word, fine, clinched it! Oh well, we found some fun things even though I had to let go of some others.
I know some people are over the interest in old rolling pins. But I found so many interesting ways on Pinterest to repurpose them that I bought several of them along with other old handmade wooden tools. They are mostly handmade circa 1900. Apparently the family were antique dealers as the prices and descriptions were on some of the pieces...$55 for the antique water dipper burl above. And $50 for the butter mold below. But now you can get them for, not $55, but the incredibly low price of...just kidding...It will be way lower than that but I won't say here...

Not sure what the above is...nut cracker?

Then I purchased a box of linen..

A beautiful cut work tablecloth and crewel work material. I might make some pillows out of this material ...

And last but not least, I purchased this pitcher and much, much, more...

ESTATE SALES, BOBBLEHEADS, AND AN AUCTION

The last few days have been a whirlwind of activity! But a whirlwind of fun activity so it's all good!

On Thursday my granddaughter, Brianna, and I went up to the Cities to pick up some things I won on an online auction. I got four vintage sleds and a large flat vintage drawer ( similar to a printers drawer without the shelves ) that I will turn into a chalkboard. Then we went to three Estate Sales where we picked up a large vintage drying rack, a vintage metal milk carton holder, a vintage mini cutting board ( not the kind you might be thinking of ), enamel ware, yellow ware, large wooden bowl in the shape of a goose, vintage typewriting table, old keys, a cute old suitcase, and vintage books! Our car was full! I'll put the pictures up later but haven't had time to sort through everything and get photos up. We had a great time with Bri helping navigate (with the help of Greta the garmin) around the suburbs of the Cities. We had lunch at Lee Ann Chins! Yummy! I took my camera but got so caught up in all the buying, that we forgot to take pictures. And on top of that it was raining so we were running from the car to the houses all day! Still it was a fun time to share this hobby with my granddaughter.

On Friday my husband and I went to the Twin Cities for the Twins baseball game. We had to get there early and stand in line...in a massive crowd... in the hot sun... for over an hour... to make sure we received the free Harmon Killebrew bobblehead giveaway! Guess whose idea that was? Then after we got in, we had another two hours before the game started! Tired from standing in the hot sun and not having much sleep the night before, I was ready for a nap! Yeah, that wasn't going to happen! Fortunately, we belong to a club that lets us into a really nice air conditioned area with seating for dining and restaurants that offer more than hot dogs and cracker jacks. So I perked up a bit and we sat down to a meal of fresh Minnesota walleye, french fries, and lemonade. Note to self: Next time get more sleep before baseball games!! Oh, and we did get there in time to get our bobbleheads...one for each of us. I'm selling mine on eBay!We also made a decision that if we don't have commitments the following day, we would stay overnight the next time we went to a game.

After driving home after the game and getting home close to midnight, we crashed into bed. Another late night and getting up early the next morning for a big sale that I couldn't miss! I picked up some ironstone, a cute vintage lunchbox with thermos, vintage pitcher with juice glasses, and antique grate. These photos to follow in a future post also.

Then it was on to an all day auction. My husband loves these auctions also and this time my daughter-in-law and Brianna came along to get some deals. It was a really long, hot day but we had a blast and picked up some fun stuff! The owner of the business, John, is a friend of ours and we know a lot of people who go so it is like a party really! As you can see John is very patriotic and begins each auction asking everyone to stand and say the pledge of allegiance. He also then shares where the auction contents come from telling about the collections of the families and in this auction how one family's bell collection spanned three generations! (And yes, I bought a few very interesting bells!!) John also is very interested in history and preservation and is in the forefront in our community in trying to save historic buildings from demolition. He encouraged everyone to write letters to the local paper, encouraging the community to keep preserving historic buildings. He makes these events fun and interesting, occasionally sharing bits and pieces of information about people who end up winning a bid. Like the elderly gentleman who could hardly walk and was losing his memory but his wife brought him as he always enjoyed the auctions. He would win a bid and John would tell us that this gentleman was an extraordinary lawyer in his younger days and he enjoyed the privilege of knowing him all these years. John is a very kindhearted person himself.

Everyone brings lawn chairs to the auction and relaxes ( and eats ) while bidding in the main arena which offers the higher end items.  At this auction in the main arena there were vintage motorcycles, like the Indian Motorcycle  pictured here, and vintage cars. My husband talked to the owner of the vehicles who was in attendance. He had an oxygen tank and stated that he didn't have long to live so he had to give up his collection. It was sad but also a reminder that everything we have is temporary and fleeting and we can't take anything with us. We need to hold our stuff lightly and be willing to let go of them when we need to.

There are always two areas with items being auctioned off. The other auction being in the adjacent building. My husband, Les, and I usually go back and forth so as not to miss items we've decided to bid on. Sometimes we split up and are bidding in both areas. I tell Les what I want and how much I think we should spend on an item.

Each auctioneer has different little sayings they like to throw in the middle of their " auctioneering speil". One auctioneer likes to say, "If you're done. I'm done." Another line is, " It's only money. You can always make more!" Hah! I like that one! That guy knows my buying triggers! It actually motivated me to buy! I'm not sure if other auctions are as fun as the one John's company puts on, but if there is an auction near you, you should check it out. There are bargains to be had for sure. It does take all day, however, and some people don't like to take the time. I guess that is where we come in. We do all the running here, there, and everywhere and spend all day at auctions just to get you some of the best deals in vintage finds around! I'll be sharing photos of my finds this week so keep watching.

Anyway, today I rested up from the whirlwind of the last three days. Now I have to go though all the goodies I bought, clean them up, tag them, and store them. Oh yes, and take photos of them for ya'll to see before the Labor Day sale!
